Norinchukin at a Glance

What is the Norinchukin Bank?

A Financial Institution Dedicated to Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (AFF) Industries

The Norinchukin Bank is a financial institution whose members include Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), Japan Fishery Cooperatives (JF), Japan Forest Owners’ Cooperatives (JForest) and other cooperative organizations.

By delivering solutions that go beyond conventional finance, we help build a sustainable future for the AFF industries and the communities that support food production and everyday life.

How We Support AFF Industries

We contribute to the growth of AFF industries by generating returns on local funds and creating value through financing and business support.

On the left, nationwide members (JA, JF, Forest Cooperatives, etc.) and local members/users are depicted, providing deposits and services to Norinchukin Bank. In the center is Norinchukin Bank. On the right, the global financial market and agri-forestry-fishery producers/companies are shown. Norinchukin Bank invests funds in the global financial market and provides funding and business support to agri-forestry-fishery producers and companies. The bank also provides business support and returns profits to its members.

Our support for AFF industries is built on an extensive flow of funds entrusted to us by members across Japan, including JAs, JFs and JForests.

Funds deposited by farmers, fishers and local residents are entrusted to The Norinchukin Bank through our member organizations. We invest these funds in global financial markets while also providing financing to businesses in the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors and related industries through loans, investments and other financial solutions.

By returning income generated in global markets to our members and directly supplying capital to domestic industries, we help strengthen business foundations and support new challenges and opportunities.

In addition to loans, investments and other financial services, we provide a range of non-financial services, including consulting and support for overseas business expansion. By delivering these services in an integrated manner, we contribute to the growth of AFF industries from multiple perspectives.

Building Strong Community Connections with JA and JF

Our role extends beyond the flow of funds through our member organizations.
Together with local JAs and JFs, as well as JA Shinnoren (Prefectural Banking Federations of Agricultural Cooperatives) and JF Shingyoren (Prefectural Banking Federations of Fishery Cooperatives), we function as a unified financial network through JA Bank and JF Marine Bank. Through these community-based networks, we provide loans, deposit services and other financial solutions directly to farmers, fishers and local residents.

A Shared Journey with AFF Industries

More than a century of unwavering commitment and continuous transformation.

Since our establishment, we have remained committed to a single mission: supporting the development of AFF industries.
For more than 100 years, we have continued to evolve in response to changes in society and the environment surrounding these industries, while steadfastly supporting those engaged in AFF industries.

  • 1923~ The Establishment of The Norinchukin Bank to Support AFF Industries

    • The Norinchukin Bank was established to address funding shortages in agriculture, fisheries and forestry as a financial institution built on the cooperative organizations serving these industries.
    • Across Japan, we have supported producers by providing funds to cooperative organizations for lending activities and by meeting large-scale financing needs beyond the capacity of individual cooperatives.
  • 1970~ Transforming Our Business Model to Meet Changing Times

    • From the 1970s onward, deposits accepted by JA from its members grew significantly. This led to an increase in deposits entrusted to us, which serve as a source of funds for our operations, enabling us to expand financing for agribusinesses and other related companies, provide funds to Japan's short-term money market, and increase investments in Japanese government bonds.
    • Leveraging our overseas network, we entered ”Globally Diversified Investments" in 1998 and have since continued to enhance our asset management capabilities through our investment business.
  • 2000~ Strengthening Integrated Operations with Cooperative Organizations

    • In the early 2000s, JA Bank and JF Marine Bank were launched as integrated financial networks, enabling The Norinchukin Bank, JA Shinnoren/JF Shingyoren, and JA/JF to function effectively as a single financial institution.
    • While JA Bank and JF Marine Bank have provided financial services through extensive nationwide networks, The Norinchukin Bank has fulfilled its role as the central institution within these networks, a function that continues today as part of our retail business.
  • 2010~ Supporting Recovery and Strengthening the Food and Agribusiness

    • Following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, The Norinchukin Bank established the Reconstruction Support Program and, in collaboration with cooperative organizations, provided comprehensive support to people engaged in the AFF Industries and our members in the disaster-affected areas.
    • In 2016, we launched the Food and Agribusiness Division to further strengthen our contribution to the development of the AFF Industries.
  • 2020~ Defining Our Purpose and Continuing Our Commitment to Supporting the Development of the AFF Industries

    • In 2021, we established our Purpose, redefining The Norinchukin Bank's raison d'être.
    • To continue fulfilling our enduring mission of supporting the development of the AFF Industries, we are advancing initiatives centered on our three core businesses: Food and Agribusiness, Retail, and Investment.

Our Philosophy
